Kez & Paul’s story
Kerri Gray was diagnosed with breast cancer in mid 2007 and despite her determined and ‘never give up’ attitude, sadly passed away four years later on the 10th March 2011, one month before her 39th birthday.
Kerri (who was nicknamed Kez) was the wife of local Bendigo builder Paul Gray and mother to Darcy and Emily (then aged 7 and 11). The children are well known in the Bendigo community for their voiceovers on radio commercials for their dad’s business which states “Paul Gray is our dad and he will build you a house to live in”.
After Kerri’s secondary breast cancer diagnosis in 2010, Paul took time off work to be her full time carer. During this time he is proud to say “he didn’t miss a single appointment, treatment or milestone of Kerri’s!” Paul says that his wife, Kerri “was a wonderful woman, whose family and kids were everything to her”. He sees her legacy as a great foundation she gave the kids and says “she gave them a really good grounding early in their lives and it shows now. We talk about their mum all the time and they are a pillar of strength to me.”
Through Kerri’s breast cancer journey, the Gray’s squeezed in as many family holidays as they could and realised “that a short break can make a hell of a difference to those dealing with breast cancer”. Paul believes the ‘family getaways’ and his time as Kerri’s full time carer, brought them even closer than ever and he will be forever grateful for this.
Kerri planted the seed for Kez’s Hideaway saying to Paul “You should do something, it would be good to build a house for The Otis Foundation”. Paul Gray, The Otis Foundation and local community are now going to make her vision a reality.
